In a recent interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” President-elect Donald Trump stated his intention to collaborate with Democrats to create a solution enabling ‘Dreamers’—undocumented immigrants who arrived as children—to continue residing in the United States.
“I will work with the Democrats on a plan, and if we can come up with a plan, but the Democrats have made it very very difficult to do anything,” he told host Kristen Welker. “Republicans are very open to the Dreamers.”
Trump emphasized that many of these individuals have established successful businesses and careers.
Supporting this initiative not only acknowledges the contributions of Dreamers but also boosts economic growth. According to a study by the Center for American Progress, removing DACA recipients from the workforce could reduce the U.S. GDP by $433 billion over the next decade. Additionally, Dreamers contribute approximately $9.5 billion annually in federal, state, and local taxes, strengthening public finances. Fully integrating them into American society is not only an act of justice but also an economically beneficial strategy for the country.
The immigrant community and its advocates are closely monitoring the development of these policies and the potential bipartisan negotiations that could determine the fate of hundreds of thousands of ‘Dreamers’ in the country.
