Why Querétaro is Emerging as Mexico’s New Tech Hub: Amazon’s $5 Billion Investment and What’s Next

When you think of global tech investment, Silicon Valley often comes to mind. But in recent years, a new destination is gaining momentum for its technological promise: Querétaro, Mexico. This week, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced an unprecedented $5 billion USD investment over the next five years to develop cloud infrastructure in this growing region. It’s a move that not only signals confidence in Querétaro but also sets the stage for the city to become a central player in Mexico’s tech ecosystem.

Amazon’s Vision for Querétaro

AWS’s substantial investment in Querétaro reflects the region’s strategic importance for cloud services and digital transformation. According to AWS, this initiative aims to meet the increasing demand for cloud computing across Latin America while creating new job opportunities and supporting local businesses. Querétaro’s central location, reliable infrastructure, and focus on innovation make it an ideal spot for this expansion.

According to the company, by connecting its network to AWS at this new location, users will gain private and direct access to all AWS public regions (except those in China), AWS GovCloud regions, and AWS Local Zones.

This new location in Querétaro offers dedicated connections of 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps, with MacSec encryption available for 10 Gbps. Utilizing this new Direct Connect location to access resources running in the AWS Local Zone in Querétaro is an ideal solution for applications requiring local data processing or latency of 9.99 milliseconds or less.

Amazon’s $5 billion investment isn’t an isolated case. Querétaro has positioned itself as a hub for foreign direct investment (FDI), with over 54 billion pesos (~$3 billion USD) in new projects expected to follow in the coming years. Local authorities have confirmed the city is attracting companies from diverse sectors, including IT, manufacturing, and renewable energy.

This economic influx is projected to generate thousands of high-quality jobs, driving sustained growth and enhancing Querétaro’s reputation as a prime destination for international businesses. Key players like AWS serve as magnets, encouraging other corporations to establish their operations in the area.

Why Querétaro?

Querétaro’s appeal lies in its combination of modern infrastructure, connectivity, and a business-friendly environment. It boasts world-class data centers and a central geographic position that allows easy access to major cities like Mexico City and Monterrey. Additionally, the region has a highly educated workforce and a government actively promoting innovation and sustainability, aligning well with the values of global corporations.

What’s Next for Querétaro?

With AWS taking the lead, Querétaro is set to see a surge in technological advancements and international partnerships. As other companies follow in Amazon’s footsteps, the region is poised to become a key player in Latin America’s digital revolution. Querétaro’s transformation into a tech hub will not only benefit the local economy but also strengthen U.S.-Mexico relations, fostering innovation and cross-border collaboration.
